Complaints, already? Seriously?
March 18, 2009 in General by admin
It appears that the complainer in question (henceforth known affectionately as Moaning Myrtle) has deleted or otherwise made unavailable the lovely lovely blog that they posted here, but fortunately for me, I got to see it anyway (thank you, Oh Wondrous And Loyal Followers).
I’ll graciously take the time to address your issues – because really, it’s not like I have anything better to do. I mean I’m not trying to set up a public blogging community or anything.
(Oh wait…)
Anyway. In point form, for your convenience, no less;
1. this platform is glacially slow. i do not remember WordPress being so sluggish and slow. so who ever set this up, did something. i’ve no speed issues eslewhere so it has to be how this was set up. (i’m writing this is notepad to c&p as soon as the page loads..that’s how slow this is!)
I’m in South Africa. Internet here is about a billion years behind what it is in the UK. We’re on a broadband connection that averages a dial-up speed. We have to wait for YouTube movies 30 seconds long to finish buffering before we watch them. You’d think that if anyone were to have trouble with a slow load time, it’d be us – amazingly, perhaps, we don’t. The site works fine. We didn’t ‘do something’ when we set it up, other than set it up in the first place. There’s kinda only one way to install Wordpress MU. You install it. It’s installed. The end.
2. i hadn’t thought to make note of all the usual folks i keep up w/ & the only blogs listed on ‘front page’ are the latest created. another dumb idea. so.. until or unless i can locate other blogs… just another reason to not spend too much time here.
Setting my anger aside at the ‘another dumb idea’ remark (I’d love to shout and swear and generally belittle this astute user at this juncture but really, this isn’t the place…); I would like to point out how long we’ve been working on this site.
One week. This site was created one week ago. We have one coder working on it (who also has a full time job), and one front-end admin (me). So tell me, Moaning Myrtle – did you complain about the efx2blogs.com front page, that lists only the most recently joined members? After all, it’s been on the front page there for over a year now, and I know you’re an efx2blogs user. And tell me something else – why were you complaining about this before I’d even answered your related question that you posted in the shout box?
The site has been up for one week. Everything you see here has been accomplished by two people in one week. There was no planning before hand. We decided to do this, and we created the site on the same day as that decision was made. This front page is littered with notices that highlight how very much under construction we are – if you haven’t seen them, maybe we’re not the dumb ones after all.
The feature you require will be active as soon as the coder has enough time to do it. Comments like this won’t encourage him to work any harder or faster. An apology might.
We anticipate that it will take roughly a month before this site is fully functional. If you don’t like wearing a hard-hat or you’re afraid of camping in the woods, I politely suggest that you wait outside the fence until the feather cushions are in place and the chandeliers are swinging.

Ohhhh Lordie *pours hisself a strong cuppa Joe*
What a bizarre complaint about the blogs listing since the site is rather heavily under construction. Those who have been brave enough to use it already will have noticed that there’s something new almost every day.
And even in this construction zone I think things are working rather well akshully.
As for the speed. Well, if any of you are having issues with speed, please tell us the time you accessed it, your geographic location, and if it is consistently slow.
And “dumb idea” ? … honestly … It’s like telling your house builder halfway through construction “This house does not have a roof, what a dumb idea!” or taking a burger-bun out of the bag and complaining that it does not have cheese and meat on.
ROFL!~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my feckin’ god.
*throws rocks at Moatle Myrtin’.
I don’t want to give people the idea that if they have criticisms we throw hissy-fits, but crikey. I think whomever wrote that was just being rude. There’s no need for that.
Why does the fact that we are building a web site automatically make us hostile to her?
*stops obsessing now*
I don’t think ‘another dumb idea’ qualifies as a criticism as much as it does an insult, heheh.
I’m willing to bet Katya Berlin will think twice before making any more shitfull comments out in the open. I sent her the link to the ‘Pain in the ass’ post on Pixie’s blog and I know the topic was read because I saw her there, right in the top right corner. I cut and pasted the comment before it was nuked. though, and it worked so I’m encouraged to do it again anywhere I see it.
Here’s a little something I’ve noticed. In efx3, for the first time in community history, people are actually prepared to take a stand and publicly say they wish the whiners would fuck off. Even people who traditionally only mildly dissented with the arsewipes or discussed it in PMs are coming out and saying a big, loud “NO!” It’s a trend I like. With no more Keith to take cheap shots at, how about rallying behind Pixie and Rusty and everything they’re making possible for us? How about this time the venom gets shot at the scumbags who really deserve it?
And why is ‘name and shame’ such a no-go area? Strap a pair on, I say. If some ungrateful bastard is willing to take aim then I’m willing to fire back. I’m happy to do whatever it takes to rub your face in your comments until you apologise as openly as you blogged your whine. Perhaps efx3 could develop a culture of supporting the owners and admins and letting the idiot element know that whatever they may have gotten away with in the past it will no longer fly here.
If it needs developing, ask the admins. They’re good people. If there’s a problem, talk to them. If it’s a bitch-slapping you want, get ready for a new community ethos that will see the blowtorch being aimed at your belly. If the community once again loses its communal balls I’ll be happy to have a deep and meaningful discussion with you.
the server is in texas afaik so anyone who’s having a connection problem should check with a trace command (like “tracert”) and determine exactly at the point the connection times out. someone’s route from their home computer to a particular web server is completely different to the route i take from my home computer to the same web server so to blame the connection issue on the web server itself isn’t necessary for a start
people should also keep in mind that a host is exactly that – a host. you are a guest. you should be grateful for even having access to the host’s services in the first place but by all means if you’re not entirely happy then there are other hosts to go to. i suspect people who complain about the lack of features of a website wouldn’t be the same people who complain that their host’s living room isn’t in the right shade of blue. or at least i hope not. it’s very easy for people to trash someone’s website than to trash someone’s living room. some people can forget their manners when it’s as easy as writing a few lines of text and clicking a send button
i’m glad, however, that i’m not a host of a community-driven blogging service otherwise such comments would cause me to immediately delete the user’s blog and ban their ip address without notice =)
looks like my laptop’s battery is running low. time to log out :)
“i’m glad, however, that i’m not a host of a community-driven blogging service otherwise such comments would cause me to immediately delete the user’s blog and ban their ip address without notice =)”
Ahh, I prefer a public execution. *grin*
And I prefer to administer death by a thousand cuts, much in the same way a cat ‘toys’ a captured rat to death. I hope the dickheads who need to read this do so. Your time is over. Get set for a whole new reality.
Hrm. Everything has pretty much already been said, so I guess I’ll have to settle for saying I support the admins 100%. It’s not right to bitch and moan about a work in progress, especially a free one.
*stands up and slowly starts clapping
*joins*
“In efx3, for the first time in community history, people are actually prepared to take a stand and publicly say they wish the whiners would fuck off.”…..totally agree with teamdemented
Teamdemented said it so well, I can’t add much.
So I’ll just shrug my shoulders and say “Takes all kinds.”
Pixie and I were chatting about this and I said it was the efx3 version of the ‘Be Afraid’ speech from the movie Air Force One (starring Harrison Ford). A few of them have already been taken to task by PM or realised their mistake when they read the topic on Pixie’s blog. Some have had the integrity to apologise, some have added their voices in support as if what they previously wrote somehow didn’t exist, and some are completely oblivious or use weak excuses to ‘explain’ that black is really white.
I’ve been a voluble critic of the critics ever since the original efx started falling over and I always felt a bit like the voice crying out in the wilderness. I’d get plenty of PM support but little to none out in front where it would make a difference.
This time it’s different. Pixie isn’t going to take shit from anyone, as we’ve seen here and on her blog. What’s really heartening is to see others who have traditionally offered quiet support or just silent agreement in principle start to openly comment.
When good and non-controversial, non-confrontational people like yourselves and folks such as Elisa, Deejay and Kel start and continue to make public comment in support of the admins AND in condemnation of the idiots, there’s not only a greater chance that the boneheads will get lost but also the chance that a true community voice and personality will emerge.
Every efx so far as been made up of small groups who keep pretty much to themselves, but I think a strong message of intolerance towards the “Here we go again”, “This is the last time!”, “It’s all about me” and the “How dare you inconvenience me” pricks will either rid us of the vermin or make it clear to them that they are monstrously outnumbered and on a path that will see them leave or publicly apologise and pull their heads in.
It’s their turn to feel what it’s like to be targets. The difference is, they deserve it. Keith had hundreds of spiteful and untrue comments aimed at him even though he always said efx was just a hobby. Those comments were made by people who say they love efx. Damned strange sort of love. Those same people are now beginning to migrate to efx3. Without our support for the admins and efx3 they’ll continue to slag off, because they’ve successfully done it before and gotten away with it.
“NO!”
Good on you, Pixie and Rusty, for standing up for yourselves. I hope we, as a new community, draw a clear line that says to the whiners “Do Not Cross”. We don’t all have to be best friends with each other but I sometimes wonder to what degree Keith gave up because of the non-stop cowardice and stupidity of what way too many efxers did to him.
I’d prefer it if we didn’t push Pixie and Rusty anywhere near the same brink Keith was pushed to.
Boy are you kidding me? really?! Geez. This site runs smooth and quickly. I am loving it here. I guess you can’t please all the people all the time but good heavens this site has been around a week. All things considering this site rocks.
Thank you :D
some people don’t deserve access
I wish I hadn’t read any of this… :( Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
ooh ooohhh a fight?
this is really exciting…
*grins*
I think people who starts to feel entitled needs to take a minute to realize that they are actually blessed instead.
*hugs pixie and the broom*
rock on.
*and hugs PD too ;) *
Thanks Elisa. :)
Haha, Elisa… it’s not really a fight. Just a huge string of misunderstandings, hastily drawn conclusions, flaring tempers, insults* … er… ok, yeah, it’s a fight. :)
*That was me… I eventually resorted to name calling after failing with the rational reasoning ploy. Ohhh well.
And a footnote… All you peeps, please do point out things on the site that you want to change, improve, etc.! We have a massive to-do list since we announced the site a tad early, so some things might be on this list already, but there are always things we don’t think about. Thanks!
It’s all been blown massively out of proportion, if you ask me. I didn’t know anything about this until Pixie told me just now, and from what I’ve read (yay links!) it all seems a tad ridiculous.
*dons hard hat* This is a construction zone, kids. Let’s do the safety dance!
